In this chapter Jonas's father takes Gabe the newchild home for the night. When Gabe is at their home Lily points out that Gabe has the same light colored eyes as Jonas. Jonas says that is rude because Lily just broke one of the communities rules. This is a strange thing because everyone in the community has dark colored eyes and in the community everyone is supposed to be the same. In this chapter you will also learn what the ceremony of twelve is. Jonas's mother tells Lily that the ceremony of twelve is when you get your assignment for what you will be doing for the rest of your life. Lily says that she wants to be a birthmother but Jonas's mom tells her that they are dishonorable and become laborers after. When Jonas is at the recreation area with his friend asher Asher picks up an apple. They are tossing the apple back and forth, but when Asher turns and looks away the apple mysteriously changes.
