In this chapter Jonas is walking with Fiona to his training session with the giver when magically Fiona's hair changes. But again he is the only one that sees it. When he arrives at his training session he asks the giver what happened. The giver then asks him to look at the top shelf of books so Jonas does. Again the books also changed so Jonas tells the giver. The giver tells him that everyone in the village can only so black and white, but because Jonas is receiving memories with color he too is beginning to see color. For the moment the only color Jonas can see though is red.
